Citizens Advice Doncaster has joined forces with Northern Powergrid to deliver Energy Efficiency Advice, a dedicated outreach programme that tackles one of the biggest pressures facing local people today: the rising cost of energy. Together, we’re providing practical, personalised support that helps residents stay warm, reduce their bills, and build long‑term financial resilience.
Why This Work Matters in Doncaster
The cost of living continues to hit low‑income households the hardest. Many residents are facing impossible choices, between heating and eating, between paying bills and maintaining their health. Vulnerable groups, including older people, disabled residents, and those already in financial hardship, are disproportionately affected.
At the same time, the people who would benefit most from energy‑efficiency measures, grants, and income‑boosting support are often the least able to access them. That’s where Citizens Advice steps in: we are helping to close the gap, remove barriers, and empower people to take control of their energy use and household finances.
What We Aim to Achieve
Through this partnership, we are committed to:
- Reducing energy bills through behavioural changes, tariff checks, and efficient energy use
- Helping eligible households access grants and government schemes that can make homes warmer and more affordable
- Training frontline staff and volunteers to spot the signs of fuel poverty and provide early, effective support
- Connecting clients with wider services, including debt advice, income maximisation, and crisis support
We deliver this through face‑to‑face, phone, and digital advice, as well as targeted outreach in priority communities across Doncaster.
The Difference This Support Makes
Our partnership with Northern Powergrid strengthens the holistic advice our clients rely on every day. It means we can respond to immediate crises while also helping people build stability for the future.
A recent case shows exactly why this joined‑up approach is so vital.
We supported a client facing multiple vulnerabilities who was struggling to manage their energy supply alongside wider financial pressures. Through the Northern Powergrid project, we were able to provide:
- Practical, tailored energy advice
- Immediate crisis support
- Guidance on accessing local resources and longer‑term help
This didn’t just resolve the urgent issue, it helped the client regain confidence, improve their wellbeing, and move towards a more secure future.
What this means for Doncaster
- Greater energy literacy and confidence in managing household energy
- Reduced poverty as residents access the support they’re entitled to
- Improved health and wellbeing, particularly for elderly and disabled residents
- Stronger financial resilience across our communities
Together, Citizens Advice Doncaster and Northern Powergrid are making a meaningful, lasting difference.
