Advice on Prescription: Improving Health by Tackling Life’s Pressures

We recently met with Minal Bakhai MBE, to strengthen partnerships and champion bold, preventative approaches within Doncaster’s Neighbourhood Health model. Prevention is essential if we want to ease pressure on frontline services, and these conversations help us build a more joined‑up, sustainable system.

That’s why Citizens Advice Doncaster Borough’s Advice on Prescription model places specialist advisers directly in GP practices. By tackling the social determinants of health early, we help residents stabilise their circumstances, reduce stress, and prevent problems escalating. This gives people timely, person‑centred support while freeing up clinical time and reducing avoidable demand on primary care.

Why Advice on Prescription Matters

  • Specialist support in a trusted setting
  • More time for GPs and nurses to focus on medical need
  • Clear referral pathways for reception teams
  • Better wellbeing, financial stability and engagement with healthcare
  • Stronger prevention and reduced inequalities across Doncaster

Impact so far

  • 830 patients supported
  • 4,000 issues addressed

Patients report reduced anxiety and improved stability; practices report fewer repeat appointments and more focused consultations.

A Patient Story
An 82‑year‑old patient with long‑term conditions received help to access benefits, manage applications and overcome digital barriers. His annual income increased by £15,070.68, and bills reduced by £2,154.60, transforming his quality of life.

“The income I’ll be receiving now makes for a comfortable living, and I thank you for that”

Megan Ward, AOP Supervisor:
“Maintaining this provision is essential for a safe, sustainable and effective health system.”
